দেশের ঋণ পরিস্থিতির কারণে আসন্ন পার্লামেন্ট নির্বাচন সামনে রেখে কোনো অবাস্তব উন্নয়ন প্রকল্প নেবে না মালদ্বীপ। গত মঙ্গলবার দেশটির প্রেসিডেন্ট মোহামেদ মুইজ্জু এ ঘোষণা দিয়েছেন। দেশটির সংবাদমাধ্যম আধাধু এ কথা জানিয়েছে।
থা গুরাইধু দ্বীপ সফরকালে মুইজ্জু উন্নয়ন প্রকল্প নিয়ে সরকারের এই সিদ্ধান্তের কথা জানান। প্রেসিডেন্ট নির্বাচনে তিনি এই দ্বীপে সবচেয়ে বেশি ভোট পেয়েছিলেন। প্রেসিডেন্ট বলেন, বিগত সরকারের নেওয়া পদক্ষেপের কারণে ‘উত্তরাধিকার’ হিসেবে তাঁর প্রশাসনের পাওয়া অর্থনৈতিক পরিস্থিতি নিয়ে জনগণকে বিভ্রান্ত করতে চান না তিনি।
মুইজ্জু বলেন, ‘পরবর্তী দুটি মাস হবে সবচেয়ে কঠিন। এটি সবচেয়ে স্পর্শকাতর সময়। জুলাইয়ের পর পরিস্থিতি অনেকটা স্বাভাবিক হয়ে আসবে। তবে আয় বাড়ানোর জন্য এখনই আমরা কাজ শুরু করছি।’
প্রেসিডেন্ট আরও বলেন, সরকারি ঋণের উচ্চ হার ছাড়াও রাষ্ট্রীয় মালিকানাধীন প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোর ঋণও অনেক বেশি। এ ধরনের সব সমস্যা চিহ্নিত করার আগে জনগণের সত্যিকার উন্নয়ন করা যাবে না।
মুইজ্জু বলেন, ‘আমি সত্যিকারের টেকসই উন্নয়নের জন্য আন্তরিকভাবে চেষ্টা করছি। সামনে একটা নির্বাচন আছে বলে বাস্তবতা বিবেচনা না করে অতীতের ধারা মেনে শুধু প্রকল্পের ভিত্তিপ্রস্তর স্থাপন করলে ফল পাওয়া যাবে না।’
গত সেপ্টেম্বরে অনুষ্ঠিত প্রেসিডেন্ট নির্বাচনে বিজয়ী হন মুইজ্জু। আগামী মার্চের মাঝামাঝি পার্লামেন্ট নির্বাচনে ভোট গ্রহণের কথা রয়েছে। বর্তমানে পার্লামেন্টে বিরোধী জোটের সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠতা রয়েছে।
প্রেসিডেন্ট বলেন, তিনি পুরো দ্বীপরাষ্ট্রটি সফর করবেন। এই সফরের একটি উদ্দেশ্য হলো, জনগণকে অর্থনৈতিক পরিস্থিতি জানানো এবং দেশের জন্য দরকারি উন্নয়ন প্রকল্পের পরিকল্পনা গ্রহণ।
