তীব্র শীতের প্রভাবে দেশব্যাপী দুই হাজারের অধিক ফ্লাইট বাতিল করেছে মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্র। এর প্রভাব সবচেয়ে বেশি পড়েছে দেশটির মধ্যাঞ্চলীয় অঙ্গরাজ্য ইলিনয়সের রাজধানী শিকাগোর নানা বিমানবন্দরে।
শনিবার (১৩ জানুয়ারি) মার্কিন গণমাধ্যম এবিসি নিউজের এক প্রতিবেদনে এই তথ্য জানানো হয়েছে।
প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়েছে, দেশটির মধ্য-পশ্চিম, দক্ষিণ ও উত্তর-পূর্বে প্রবল তুষারপাত শুরু হয়েছে। এতে সেখানের বিভিন্ন বিমানবন্দরে তুষারঝড়ের সতর্কবার্তা দেয়া হয়েছে।
প্রতিবেদনে আরো বলা হয়েছে, এই অঞ্চলগুলোতে শীতের অবস্থা এমন যে ভারি তুষারপাতে বাতাস ৫০ এমপিএইচ গতিতে প্রবাহিত হচ্ছে। এছাড়া আইওয়া কক্সাসে তো কয়েক দিন আগে চালকদেরকে রাস্তায় গাড়ি চলাচল বন্ধ রাখার জন্যও অনুরোধ করা হয়েছিল।
এবিসি জানিয়েছে, শুক্রবার সকালে তুষারপাতের কারণে শিকাগো ওহারে আন্তর্জাতিক বিমানবন্দরে একটি গ্রাউন্ড স্টপ জারি করা হয়েছিল। এ সময় শিকাগো ওহারে এবং শিকাগো মিডওয়ে আন্তর্জাতিক বিমানবন্দর মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে সর্বাধিক সংখ্যক ফ্লাইট বাতিল করেছে বলেও জানানো হয়।
উল্লেখ্য, সাম্প্রতিক বৃষ্টিপাতের প্রভাবে উত্তর-পূর্বে নদীগুলো স্ফীত থাকে। তাই আগত বর্ষণ বন্যার সমস্যাকেও দীর্ঘায়িত করবে। নিউ জার্সির প্যাসাইক নদী বৃহস্পতিবার রাতে ফুলে বড় বন্যা সৃষ্টির পর্যায়ে উপনীত হয়েছিল। উত্তর-পূর্ব জুড়ে সপ্তাহান্তে আকস্মিক বন্যা, নদী বন্যা এবং উপকূলীয় বন্যা সবই সম্ভব বলে আশঙ্কা ব্যক্ত করেছে এবিসি।
