মেক্সিকোয় গত দুই সপ্তাহে তাপজনিত কারণে অন্তত ১০০ জনের মৃত্যু হয়েছে বলে জানিয়েছে স্বাস্থ্য মন্ত্রণালয়। দেশটির কোনো কোনো অঞ্চলে তাপমাত্রা ৫০ ডিগ্রি সেলসিয়াসের (১২২ ফারেনহাইট) ঘরে পৌঁছেছে।
জুন মাসে তিন সপ্তাহব্যাপী রেকর্ড দাবদাহে বিদ্যুতের চাহিদা বেড়ে যাওয়ায় গ্রিডে ব্যাপক চাপ পড়েছে। যার ফলে কর্তৃপক্ষ কিছু এলাকায় ক্লাস স্থগিত করতে বাধ্য করেছে।
মন্ত্রণালয় জানায়, তাপজনিত কারণে মারা যাওয়াদের দুই-তৃতীয়াংশের মৃত্যু হয়েছে ১৮-২৪ জুনের মধ্যে, বাকিদের মৃত্যু হয়েছে তার আগের সপ্তাহগুলোতে। যেখানে গত বছরের একই সময়ে তাপজনিত কারণে মাত্র একটি মৃত্যুর ঘটনা ঘটেছিল।
এবছর প্রায় সব মৃত্যুই হিট স্ট্রোকের জন্য দায়ী ছিল, যার মধ্যে অল্প কিছু ছিল পানিশূন্যতা। প্রায় ৬৪ শতাংশ মৃত্যুর ঘটনা ঘটেছে টেক্সাসের সীমান্তবর্তী উত্তরের রাজ্য নিউভো লিওনে। বাকিদের বেশিরভাগের মৃত্যু হয়েছে উপসাগরীয় উপকূলের প্রতিবেশী তামাউলিপাস এবং ভেরাক্রুজে।
তবে, মেক্সিকোর উত্তরের কিছু শহরে এখনও উচ্চ তাপমাত্রা দেখা যাচ্ছে। সোনোরা রাজ্যের অ্যাকোনচি শহরে গত বুধবার ৪৯ ডিগ্রি সেলসিয়াস (১২০ ফারেনহাইট) তাপমাত্রা দেখা গেছে।
