Macron goes on ‘unscheduled’ Turag river cruise

Visiting French President Emmanuel Macron experienced an essential element of Bangladeshi life by going on a brief river cruise on the Turag this afternoon.

“This is an unscheduled cruise that he had as his meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina concluded earlier [than expected],” a diplomatic source told The Daily Star.

The ship used for the cruise is managed by the NGO Friendship, the source said.

During his visit to the Turag river bank, he also stopped at a local food stall. The vendor was seen offering the French president a plate with a shingara, samosa and jilapi.

After the official banquet last night,President Macron also went to the studio of Joler Gaan and interacted with the singers, including the band’s lyricist Rahul Anand.

He also listened to the music of the band.

In the morning today, Macron paid homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahamn at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi.

He then held the bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister at the PMO.

Macron is scheduled to leave Dhaka around 2:00pm today, ending a less than 20-hour visit after attending the G20 Summit in New Delhi.
