বিএনপিকে ভোটে আনতে সব চেষ্টাই করেছে আওয়ামী লীগ। এমনকি একরাতে সব নেতাকে জেল থেকে মুক্তির প্রস্তাবেও বিএনপি রাজি হয়নি বলে জানিয়েছেন আওয়ামী লীগের সভাপতিমণ্ডলীর সদস্য ও কৃষিমন্ত্রী ড. আবদুর রাজ্জাক। তিনি বলেন, বারবার নির্বাচন কমিশন থেকে বলা হয়েছে, বিএনপি নির্বাচনে আসলে নির্বাচন পিছিয়ে দেয়া হবে। শুধু পিছিয়ে দেয়া নয়, বলা হয়েছে, সবাইকে জেল থেকে ছেড়ে দেয়া হবে। আজ একটি বেসরকারি টিভি চ্যানেলকে দেয়া এক সাক্ষাৎকারে তিনি এসব কথা বলেন। আবদুর রাজ্জাক বলেন, বিএনপির ২০ হাজার নেতাকর্মীকে গ্রেপ্তার না করলে বাংলাদেশে আজকে হরতালের দিন গাড়ি চলতো না। এছাড়া আমাদের কোনো গত্যন্তর ছিল না। যেটা করেছি আমরা চিন্তাভাবনা করেই করেছি। তাদের জেলে না রাখলে দেশ অচল হয়ে যেতো।
