মহাকাশ অভিযানের বৈশ্বিক প্রতিযোগিতায় ইউরোপের উপস্থিতি বেশ দুর্বল বলা যায়। যুক্তরাষ্ট্র নিয়মিত মহাকাশে বড় বড় মিশন পরিচালনা করলেও বেশ পিছিয়ে রয়েছে ইউরোপ। আর তাই মহাকাশ অভিযানে নিজেদের উপস্থিতি জোরদার করতে ইউরোপের ২২টি দেশ ‘আরিয়ান ৬’ নামের নভোযান তৈরির উদ্যোগ নেয়। অবশেষে গত মঙ্গলবার ইউরোপের প্রতিনিধি হিসেবে ‘আরিয়ান ৬’ নভোযান সফলভাবে মহাকাশে প্রবেশ করেছে। যদিও নভোযানটির মাধ্যমে পণ্য পরিবহনে সাফল্য পাওয়া যায়নি। একটি রাফাল ফাইটার জেটে ইউরোপের এ নভোযানটি ফ্রেঞ্চ গায়ানা থেকে উৎক্ষেপণ করা হয়।
ইউরোপের প্রতিনিধি হিসেবে ‘আরিয়ান ৬’ নভোযানের উৎক্ষেপণ বেশ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটি ঘটনা। যদিও গবেষণার উদ্দেশ্যে তিনটি মাইক্রো-স্যাটেলাইট স্থাপন করতে মহাকাশে পাঠানো হয়েছে নভোযানটি। সফলভাবে ‘আরিয়ান ৬’ উৎক্ষেপণকে নিজেদের সাফল্য হিসেবে দেখছে ইউরোপীয় স্পেস এজেন্সি। এ বিষয়ে ফ্রান্সের সিএনইএস স্পেস এজেন্সির প্রধান ফিলিপ ব্যাপটিস্ট বলেন, ইউরোপ মহাকাশে আবারও উপস্থিত হয়েছে।
‘আরিয়ান ৬’ নভোযান তৈরিতে খরচ হয়েছে প্রায় ৪০০ কোটি ইউরো। ফ্রান্সের আরিয়ান গ্রুপ এই নভোযান তৈরি করেছে। ২০২০ সালে মহাকাশে ইউরোপের নিজস্ব নভোযান পাঠানোর লক্ষ্য নিয়ে কাজ শুরু হলেও বারবার বিলম্ব দেখা যায় মিশনে। ইউরোপীয় স্পেস এজেন্সির ভারপ্রাপ্ত পরিচালক টনি টোলকার-নিলসেন জানান, ‘আরিয়ান ৬’ ইউরোপের মহাকাশ গমনের উচ্চাকাঙ্ক্ষার জন্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এটি প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক ও সরকারি মিশনের জন্য মহাকাশে সার্বভৌমভাবে যাওয়ার সুযোগ তৈরি করছে।
